WiNNiNG iSN'T EVERyTHiNG

Hi my name is Holly, and I am 8 years old with golden brown hair and sapphire blue eyes that sparkle like the sea just like my mother's. Today I am going to be telling you about a story of when I was a professional pie eater at the county fair. My parents are very wealthy, and my father was also a pie eater like me and that's why I started getting into competitions with my father, but unfortunately my father died when I was 6 years old which has been a tragedy for me and my mom. I have been with my mother only since that time but me and her had our good times before she entered me into the young singles pie eating competitions.
I used to be in competitions with my father, and that was the best year of my life since I got to spend time with him. We would always practice whenever my mom used to make pies for us, but then we would only leave one pie for all of us to enjoy together. We were all once a very happy family but ever since my father died the only thing that matters to my mom is me winning the competitions. So whenever I have a competition I am always focused on what I am supposed to do, which is really easy, all I have to do is eat a giant pie faster than the competitors which is kind of easy for a little girl. The only type of pie that I would eat is cherry pie it reminds me of my father because that was his favorite scent of all. Now I am going to take you back to the day that I was poisoned at the fair.
      “BEEP BEEP, BEEP BEEP !”
“ UGHH I DON'T WANT TO WAKE UP 5 MORE MINUTES PLEASE !” even though no one could hear me because I was deep inside my covers.
“ Holly sweetie wake up it's time for you to get up or else you are going to be late for the county fair competition.” announced my mother in a strict tone of voice. My mom means the world to me, because she is the only person who I have left in my life.
      “ Mother please 5 more minutes !”
“ No Holly, lets go come on get up.”
“ Okay mother I'm up, I'm up!” I answered with a very mummified tone of voice for waking up at the crack of dawn, even though it was more like 8am.
“ Holly are you up yet? If you are then come downstairs to eat breakfast.”
“ Yes mother I'm up I was just washing my face and hands.” I replied, even though I still looked like if I were dead from last night. I had bags under my eyes and I was flopping all over the place with a rotten look. No one would really expect this from me, because whenever I step out of my house I am always very well dressed with a nice little dress like the one I was wearing that day. A dark marine blue with little touches of red in it, and my hair up that had three little knobs and it would look like if I would have just came out of the salon. Everybody knew who I was because I am usually on the front page of a lot of newspapers and clippings. I am the youngest pie eater in the whole Southwest. From all of the people that I know only one person has hated my family, and his name is Andrew Fox. He never liked me or my father because we would always beat him and his daughter, Elizabeth, in the competitions to the rate that his eyes were filled with fury. He's always wanted revenge but I am guessing that he has forgot all about it and has put it in his past.
Once I am done eating my breakfast I go back up the stairs with a unenthusiastic attitude. “THUMP, THUMP, THUMP, THUMP” are the only sounds coming from me. Once I get changed and all girlied up I am ready for my competition there is nothing that can really stand in my way of winning, because this would make my father proud and so may he rest in peace. Also for my mother who is there by my side all the time. Now it's the time to go to the competition that I have been waiting for. While I was coming downstairs all I could see was my mother's face brighten up with joy. She once told me that I reminded her of my father.
“ Holly you look great , come on lets go sweetie or were going to be late.” So there we go headed out the door. We step into the car and I just sit and wait, and wait, and wait. Until I could see the fair. Once I see the fair in plain sight I roll down the window and I suddenly felt the fresh air against my face. The air would bring smells to me while the car was in motion. Pumpkins, squash, horses, gas, popcorn, cotton candy, and the best of all cherry pies that were freshly baked to smell but the only thing that I could think of during the car ride was my father and I would just wonder if he would be proud of me. The only sounds were crowds going wild in the tents, laughter from everyone having a good time, screams from the rides scaring the souls out of them and the words
      “CHUG, CHUG, CHUG, CHUG, CHUG!”
This was like my safe place and heaven. I stepped out of the car and I just smile but no words came out of my mouth in that moment, I needed to install my brain into the fair and the competition. I start walking towards my station where I was going to be eating, I couldn't wait until that pie was mine. I was so nervous that me and my mom went to walk around the fair and look at the different booths, and play a few games, but during the time I was doing this the organizers were already setting up for the competition. When the organizers left for a little while someone had poisoned my pie and no one had any idea who it was. I start going back because I knew it was time for me to get back for the contest so I could get into my place and be ready.
I had turned around and saw that Andrew Fox and his daughter were there at the competition as well, so I had found out that his daughter was competing against me so we all had an awkward moment of silence. When one of the organizers had said that one minute was left until the competition started my heart just started racing faster and faster. I thought that my heart was going to jump out of my chest, but I was lucky enough that it didn't. Then the words of the moment arrived “ARE YOU, GET SET, EAT !” So there I go eating my pie as fast as I could but then I start feeling nauseous and when I look up I can't see anything because it was way to blurry and I felt that I was going to just collapse. That's when I had fainted. But the weird part was that I could still hear stuff that was going around me but I couldn't talk . All I could hear was
“ CALL 911 AND SAY THAT A LITTLE GIRL FAINTED !” and my mom just repeating
“ HOLLY, HOLLY WAKE UP SWEETIE WAKE UP !” with a high pitched voice that sounded like if she was going to faint as well but she was just crying with a lot of desperation. The next thing that I knew was that I woke up in the hospital and my mom was next to me crying her sapphire blue eyes out which had turned into rivers flowing through her face. She had told me everything that had happened that day she had said that I was in a coma for two days and that I had fainted because I was poisoned.
At that moment, Andrew Fox had came in to my room with a guilty face and my mom had asked him if he needed something but there was no reply. He could only say two words I'm sorry and we would just kept asking why but no response would come out of his mouth. Until he came clean saying that he was the one who had poisoned my pie so I could lose and so that his daughter could win for once in her life. He just begged for our forgiveness, but I said “ I'll forgive but you still need to earn our trust back and Mr. Fox winning isn't everything.” The only thing that I could say to my mom when Mr. Fox left was that I was fortunate that I didn't die because then she would be left on earth all alone and that we should be grateful that we had each other and that my father would be very proud of us because we would never be inseparable.
Two years passed and Mr. Fox had died in a tragic car accident and to this day his daughter is in a wheelchair and may remain in one for the rest of her life. I know how it feels to lose your father. One day she came to me saying that she knows my pain since she lost her father. We are getting along now so we may just hope that we are going to become friends. I had told her the same thing I told her father which my father had mentioned to me as well “ Winning isn't everything”

HERO iN MY EYES

My Techy Kookie Monster
By : Jocelyn León

Enrique León just may be a regular guy to others but to me he is my older brother. My brother is tall, with black hair and brown eyes. Though many words could describe him, I think that there is one in particular that stands out, which is awesome. Enrique was seventeen and a senior in High Tech High International. The day of all days in his life that I have been part of I think that his high school graduation is what inspires me the most.
Saturday June 20th 9am. The day of the graduation. Here we all are on the green moist lawn in the middle of High Tech High and High Tech Middle. The sky was gray and gloomy like if it were Halloween night. The mood overall was very overwhelming because everyone knew it was time to let their kids go and explore the world on their own. Once I saw my brother come out of the building to take a seat on the stage I had a flashback from four years ago when he was graduating from the eighth grade. He was once walking out of the door as a boy but now walking out as a man into the real world on his own.
It is time, time for the graduation to start. All you could see on the stage was the board of directors of High Tech High and all the seniors of High Tech High International. This day may be the most scariest yet happiest day of a teenager's life. Scary because they are going to start a whole new life on their own, happy because they are done with high school and off to college. From this point of the ceremony while I was thinking this all the board of directors and part of the students were saying that each one of those students who were graduating that day were pushing themselves to get to that point of their lives and that they did a good job and that they could not also believe that they were once freshman but now the graduating class of 2009.
When that was all over it was time to give the diplomas out to the students. This is the point when all the students and parents start getting emotional because like I say, their baby boy or girl is leaving the coop. I would get emotional because I could not believe that I was seeing with my own two eyes that my brother is graduating and going off to college and pursuing his dream of getting his Masters in Computer/Electrical Engineering and I admire him for this. He had made me, my sister and my parents proud to be the first high school graduate and the first to go to college. Now it is my turn to go through the path of the four years of high school. The time of pain has come to me.
My brother was the last one on his side to get his diploma but then the waiting was over he was now walking the aisle of chances. When I saw him at the podium the same flashback came to me when he was a boy graduating from the eighth grade and now is a man graduating from high school. My brothers words of this whole day were, "It's finally over; it's finally begun".

GRADUATiON DAY

This was a big day for many teens in San Diego. It was the day when I was graduating from Robert Fulton Elementary. When I woke up that morning at 5 am, I had thought that this was one of the most hectic and chaotic days of my life. Why? Well it was one of the most hectic and chaotic day because when I woke up all I could hear in my head was myself screaming my head off. At this point I was very nervous and turning into a rotating pool of emotions and every other minute I would go to the la la land of thinking. I was going to this place so I could just think how my life was going to be after my graduation.

In the time of my rotating emotions that had been going around like if was uncontrollable. The first emotion that I had to fight off was nervous, this emotion was the one that made me go into a total wreck. I started thinking “oh my god oh my god oh my god” and started getting those chills up your spine like you had just stepped into a cold shower in the middle of winter. I was getting paranoid for no reason but those words just kept on coming coming like the chain mail text messages that everyone despises to send.

When I was going through all of my reckless emotions I started wondering again What is going to happen after this? No one can answer that but then neither can I. When I was always finished spacing out from la la land I would get these shivers up my spine like I have just been out in the cold in Alaska. But when the last time I had spaced out I was thought about walking down the steps the and imagining myself tumbling down, but then I was saying to myself that I was just to paranoid and thinking irrationally.

At the end of the graduation I felt that I accomplished 6 years of elementary school and that I was going to progress in my life. That day was the most special and learned that you cant have everything you want in life. If you wanted something then you are gonna have to work your way to earn it because everything is not going to be just given to you in the palm of your hands. Someone had told me that life is work no matter what and you can not escape from it or give up from it.

SENSORY DETAiL : SOUND

LiNK : http://margaretnoble.net/blog/bowed_psaltery/

It was as if I were in a sea of violins flooding and crowding all over me but then I could just imagine that I was on the titanic next to the string orchestra playing there romantic soft melodies. The way this instrument plays is like if you were in a dream of wonders just prancing by your mind every other day.
